I still dont know what the fourth wall is.

It refers to the figurative "wall' between the characters in a story, and the audience.

I'm pretty sure it comes from the theatre - when you go see a play, they build 3 walls to make the set the actors act in, so the fourth wall is just imagined.

You "break" the fourth wall by having the characters talk to the audience directly, or become aware that they are in a story.

I think it works for plays, movies, TV, video games, internet, even books.

Anytime a fictional character interacts with the audience directly, or does something that shows awareness they're not a real person, or reminds the audience that what they're interacting with isn't real, I would count that as breaking the fourth wall.

it's becoming popular with "documentary" style fiction, Modern Family and Housos are two I can think of off the top of my head
