I tried describing "Dr Strangelove" and this scene to my 21 year old son. He has not seen the movie and could not comprehend the concept of bombers flying off to complete MAD. I don't know if that it's a good thing or not, that we won the cold war? At least then we knew who our enemy was (only one big dog instead of a pack of jackals).

Ha ha! I forget that your son, I have 2 daughters, and a son, all close in age as your son, that they didn't grow up with the threat that we did. I never tried explaining it to them, and after reading what you wrote, I'm not sure I could do a good job at it either! Lol. I remember in 1983, when the Soviets shot down Korea Air Flight 007, even as kid in 3rd-4th grade, the look of concern on my father's face, worried the hell out of me and I would be looking in the sky for a nuke! Way different times, just think what our parents felt during the Cuban Missle Crisis! Then again, if we took there iPhones and iPads away for a week, they may get the idea? Lol

True, true. I was in the Marine Corps since 1982. Lots of "high alerts". The funny thing is, I remember when Reagan was first running for President in 1980, everyone thought that he'd be the first to "push the button". Turns out, he won the cold war because our enemies only recognize strength and prey on weakness. It was refreshing after having the peanut farmer. Too bad the current regime doesn't understand that.

Cool! He was the only president to not appease them and actually put them on the defensive! 1st thing that scared the Russians about him is when he fired the air traffic controllers! Looking through the old archives, The Soviets shit themselves! Their leaders kept dying ever few months too! Strength through Superior Firepower! He basically forced them to spend themselves into oblivion! Brilliant move when you understand how their economy worked! I got some insight about how it was there when I married my first wife, she was Ukrainian. Scary shit! You could walk out your front door for a smoke and disappear! It happend to her family, she lived in Kiev during Chernobyl, you're not allowed to leave the city unless you have permission, they knew through friends something was wrong and bribed guards to let them on the train to Russia Georgia to safety. Pure madness! We're lucky we that the accidents that happend didn't kill us all! Lol

My high school math teacher was an Air Force pilot, two tours in. Vietnam, was the Captain of the Air Force Thunderbird. He told me about the time he'd be sitting in his jet, at the end of a runway in South Korea, with the engine running, with a 1 megaton thermonuclear device strapped to his plane, waiting for the word to take off and go nuke a city! Knowing there's a damn good chance he's gonna die doing it! Yes, your correct, it would be hard to describe that sufficient enough to get a young man or lady to fully grasp that concept! Thanks for your comment, it's something I that definitely made me think.
