That's not true. When they first came out, they were numbered 4,5,6. It's in the crawl text at the beginning of each movie. People always knew they were 4, 5, 6.
Actually I believe that Star Wars (the original) was never supposed to have any sequels. After its success, though, they made two more movies, but I still don't think that they had numbers.
That only happened on re-releases and digital versions after it was established what episode SW was. The original scroll had no Episodes marked - you can poke around and find it on youtube, but I recall the whole debacle on the first re-release when they did that in the early 80's anyhow.

When they were first released, as far as anyone knew, they were 1,2,3 in a series, and they only became known as Episodes 4,5,6 afterwards (sometime in the 80s).
