certainly not always, but during, say an intense pub disagreement, "mate" is one of the normally polite nouns that will become strained. for instance "listen here mate, do that one more time and i will [insert violent act]". cobber is another one, a bit more old fashioned when actually referring to a friend but very popularly used with threats

We do that with "pal" or "chief" or "buddy". :-D
