You mean, like our dairy and agricultural economy, that immigrants (both documented and undocumented) keep going?

Local economies as in the ones that run public education, emergency healthcare, and social services

Arguably, emergency healthcare is being overstressed because of the lack of affordable health insurance for everyone at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum. See:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1447161/

It costs us MORE not to take care of people. Also, being thoughtful about the actual numbers may point to some unconventional (but still humane) solutions:

You didn’t mention the other points I made

The relevant statistics point to the weakness of blaming a class of people for those problems. Immigrants aren't the problem as a class (arguably, they've been keeping the US demographically healthy where many of the other developed economies are struggling). Even those who immigrated illegally aren't the problem. What you need to focus on is the small percentage of high impact users -- and then fix the system that got them where they are.

Read the Gladwell article in full: it's astonishingly persuasive.

yeah but they harm infrastructure and transit, put more demand on schools, slow down legal immigration (which they can literally do), gives unfair competition to workers, and results in downward wage pressure

Did you lose your job on a dairy farm to an immigrant? Did you not get into the school you wanted?

Many economists have done the math: immigrants are not only beneficial to our economy, they are necessary.

Data first, feelings second. Moral panic dead last.

I’m speaking for the people, not just me

The people who work on dairy farms? Or the people who benefit from the agricultural labors of immigrants?

https://cmsny.org/importance-of-immigrant-labor-to-us-economy/

This article https://www.farmaid.org/blog/fact-sheet/immigration-and-the-food-system/
explains near the end:

"Because of the hard conditions and low pay of most farm labor work, we’ve seen that these jobs do not get filled by American-born workers. A consequent shortage would compound the already-severe labor shortage in the U.S. agricultural sector, which has come about due to an aging agricultural workforce and a recent shift in agricultural production to more labor-intensive crops like fruit and vegetables. Adding in the additional stress of mass deportation would result in even higher labor costs, which would be passed on to consumers in the grocery store in the form of higher food prices."

Are you speaking for the people who want to pay more at the grocery store? The people who don't want to be able to see a doctor or get nursing care when they're sick?

what about the people that are waiting for valid immigration having to wait even longer because of these people
Go on FAIR or CIS and they’ll tell you downsides

Isn't that because the government has made it more difficult?

no???
Illegal immigration slows legal immigration genius
0 ups, 2d
You'll have to prove that one. Arguably, the money and effort spent arresting and detaining immigrants (and citizens who happen to be brown-skinned, sometimes) is using resources that could be spent processing legal immigration and asylum claims. However, that's a matter of the current administration loving to throw money at anything that glitters with the tinsel of fascism, not the immigrants' fault.
2 ups, 2d
quick question but are you ever going to address FAIR/CIS
When legal pathways are delayed, it can incentivize unlawful entry by individuals who don’t have the time but actually do
that’s why we deport

Total annual cost of illegal immigration (federal, state, local) At least $150.7 billion

Wow, so immigrants generate more than 10 times as much as they cost. Thanks for proving my point.

https://www.cfr.org/articles/how-does-immigration-affect-us-economy

"Immigrants—totaling almost 48 million out of a population of roughly 335 million people—generated about $1.7 trillion in economic activity in 2023, according to an American Immigration Council analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey that year. They also paid roughly $652 billion in local, state, and federal taxes."

In that same year, people who had immigrated illegally paid approximately $90 billion in taxes, not counting the other ways their presence and labor stimulated the economy.

Ilegals!!!

So you're saying 90 billion is bigger than 150 billion??

WOW!!!

"not counting the other ways their presence and labor stimulated the economy."

What? Like driving up housing costs and taking jobs from Americans??

LOL
0 ups, 2d
I'm saying taxes are only a part of the economic impact of a group. My exact words "not counting the other ways their presence and labor stimulated the economy."

Always read to the end of the sentence: it helps.

Republicans slash funding for healthcare and then tell you immigrants are to blame
2 ups, 2d
democrats will say the U.S. is wrong for deporting illegal immigrants even though education, local economies, etc are harmed

Americans can produce dairy too gng
0 ups, 2d
That's true, but irrelevant. It's not happening at the scale that would support our appetite for dairy. But as long as you're willing to go vegan to support your beliefs, that's fine.
