It literally can't go bankrupt as it is paid out of current taxes from workers. The cost can go up so that they are paying more, but it will never go bankrupt.
My plan is to replace it. Keep paying out those that have paid in by printing money (which they do anyway) and every new person that enters the workforce has the same amount deducted automatically like they do now, but the person gets to pick a retirement plan of their choice for it to go into, but they can't touch it until retirement age. Then we could lower the retirement age back down to 65.

Hey, I agree. GW Bush tried to change the system exactly as you describe and had his head ripped off and handed back to him. They claim Social Security pays a 2% return on investment (huge sound of a brain farting for 2 hours). The government solution only cares about feeding the government solution in perpetuity. The reality is politicians love the control Social Security gives them, and by that I mean both sides. Republicans want to cut your benefits, Democrats want to bankrupt your retirement!!!!!!!!!!! Vote for me I'll fix it this time, no really. I agree, print out the coupons for me, let the next generation actually hang on to what they've earned, invest it safely, and retire with real security, instead of the illusions politicians try to push on fearful people.
Total aside- my wife and I saw (and smelled) the BS line. We didn't take exotic vacations, we drove 20 and 25 year old paid off cars. We paid off our mortgage early ( it used to be if you made one extra payment a year on a 30 year mortgage, you paid it off in 15 years because interest is front loaded, paid first before principle). We built a place to retire to that is off the grid, no electric or utility bills- 100% paid off. We both draw Social Security, bank what we don't have to spend each month, have some frills too. When Social Security doesn't cover our modest living expenses, then we will draw off our IRA's (which are also modest). We'll die debt free after living debt free for 25 years (as of today), riding mountain bikes, paddling lakes on sit on tops, travelling to see the incredible places in the USA, eating wholesome locally grown food we buy from our neighbors. And politics will still suck big time, but we've made the best of it. Just ideas- you can come up with much better.

They pay out much more than they take in.
For every 1 old guy like me who worked and paid in from his teens you have a dozen guys 1/2 my age drawing SSI who never worked.
To make matters worse, that's the Ugly Secret of Clinton's Welfare "reforms."
They didn't reform shit.
When I worked at the local newspaper an employee at the Welfare Department called me griping about how they were moving the Welfare Bums from the Social Security rolls over to SSI.
THATS WHY it's gonna be outta money in a few years.
States like Minnesota did the same thing with their former Somali Pirates.
