They are still working for him because the job they have under him is basically the only choice they have in an economy with a shortage of jobs and it's not the 1950s and I wouldn't exactly call working for hours so they don't fall short of their rent money "lazy" or "stupid". If anything quitting your job when you should know you can't for you have to pay your bills and rent is lazy and stupid so it's pretty obvious they are being the very opposite of lazy and stupid.
