Trump weaponized it. Instead of responding to it as a health issue it was, or even at least potentially could be, he weaponized it and turned it into yet another wedge for divisiveness.
Who the heck would let people die rather than take even the smallest precautions to prevent their dying just to turn the matter of a rapidly spreading contagion into a political issue? Who does that? No, for real, who does that?
