Here's some history that I tried to make as unbiased as possible

basically the Democrats became "progressive" (heavy quote) with FDR for his new deal stuff, which was popular amongst minorities as well as the general public (progressive era)
Democrats realizing that if that stopped being racist they could get more votes, but the racist southern Democrats at the time didn't like this.

In the 1948 some southern democrats walked out the DNC and formed the dixiecrats
and the Republicans seeing this opportunity tried to appeal to the Dixiecrats.
but the Dixiecrats didn't like the Republicans initially but slowly they started to see the Republicans as the only option.
