I'm a conservative and I have empathy, I can put myself in the place of the person using the food box because I've been there. How do I boil mac and chz when living in a car? Is tomato soup the best someone can offer to someone down on thier luck or is it a backhanded "gift"?
I put gift cards in the food box these days because I can, and that way they can get what they want and need, even a hot food item like a rotissierie chicken.
Liberals say "I gave at the office" and put ramen noodles in at best and how the F am I supposed to boil them? Conservatives say "govt takes too much" and gives help directly bypassing the layers and layers of beuracrats that turn your 1 dollar tax donation into 1 penny reaching it's intended hard luck case.
I prefer to give money directly, not keep beauracrats employed, because I know what it means to need a hot meal in the middle of winter.
