IMO, the best thing to do is for the US to be in partnership Iran once they get a government that doesn't suck arse and work together to make sure ships sail safely in and out of the Straight which includes old school naval ships escorting merchant ships.

Heck, Iran's original plan before 1979 was to fully open up the country in order to compete with the rest of the world and maybe get 1st World Country status. That would've included making the Straight a major lane for thing like ship tourism, trade, and oil. Of course A LOT of people around the world including in the USA(*cough* Bush I *cough*) didn't want that and so instead of trying compete like a sane people would, they completely fooked over Iran in 1979.
