Rules are for republicans, democrats are above the law.
When the founding fathers wrote the second amendment they only had democrats in mind for constitutional protections, it was just implied republicans would always be on the "oh no you don't" end of things. Any ivy league (or any American college) constitutional scholar will tell you that.
