The Bigger Family solution is higher pay for fathers so their wives can stay home and be mothers, if they prefer

Fathers should earn more, but that's not always possible. Here are some other things that can be done to solve this problem:

1. Families should focus on what pleases them and not on spending money on things they don't really want just to show off or keep up/compete with everyone else.
2. More families should learn to cook for themselves instead of being dependent on restaurants, and to fix things for themselves instead of being dependent on mechanics, plumbers and electricians.
3. There should be more backyard and community gardens so families can have fresh fruits and vegetables without spending too much money.
4. Municipalities should allow their residents to vote to abolish their public school districts if enough parents would prefer to send their children to private schools and/or homeschool them. Then those municipalities could cut tax rates and families could save more money.

2) To a point. One of my uncles was an electrician and it can be more complex than it looks even for apparently simple things. I agree a person should learn and know how to pump their own gas, add certain lubricants like oil, brake fluid, and windshield fluid, plus change and put air in a tire before getting a driver's license.
However things like changing a fuel/oil filter while maybe easy requires a lot of equipment like vehicle lifts that were never cheap to buy just for home use. There's also the matter of safety of raising a vehicle off the floor/ground and going underneath it. For basic maintenance or replacement I agree people should learn. But for complex things or the matter of safety then leave it to the professionals or become one yourself.

3) I don't know where you live but where I live the ability to grow crops is very narrow because of the winters. Yeah, I've joked about the winters I experience but when I complain about them, there's a reason. It's impossible to do viable community gardens because of snow. Even if we used greenhouses there's the matter of keeping everything warm because of the cold outside. That would get very expensive.

4) Another idea is to have term limits for public schools and to get rid of tenure. If a teacher isn't doing the job or worse abusing a student in some way then out they go on the spot and arrest and jail time if proven to be an abuser.

In my youth, I worked at a very high volume full service "gas station" right next to an interstate highway. Back then, repairing vehicles was far easier. Room to work was greater as well as no computers. The basics are no longer taught.

Forcing women into the workforce in large numbers was mandatory to get control of raising our children and increasing personal debt.

Growing food is important, but not everyone has that option on any kind of a sufficient scale.

Bad teachers with dangerous agendas are better at turning out easily manipulated zombies than functioning and productive members of society. Home schooling remains the best tool to counteract the continuing failure of our once great education system.
