For me, it's either partial seizures or exhaustion. I had to practice looking down before it got to the stage of not being able to look away. People would start asking if I was ok but I couldn't answer them for several seconds.

I've started to be at least conscious enough to look away whenever anyone gets into my sight. It isn't very conscious, but at least enough for that. I'm at a lot of bus stops where I mostly walk around or stare at a corner and look away when someone gets there. I also listen to music through headphones nonstop, so I have a bit of an excuse to look around and move.
I've never gotten into trouble for staring, but I want to avoid that this ever happens.

I found that I was looking down at their midsection rather than their feet. That made some think I was "checking them out." If I looked at their feet they wondered why I was staring at their shoes. If I looked them in the eye they took it as a sign of aggression.... Or worse, they thought they could talk to me while I was having a partial seizure and couldn't respond to them. Its like staring blankly at them. Yeah, listening to music is the best way to get out of stupid conversation. Just be careful not to look midway down their body, though. I mean, there's just no way of making neurotypicals feel better about THEMSELVES no matter where we look.

I got punched for that once. It put me off the girl scouts.

Wow. This is hard. When was this? I never got punched for that, but people just thought I was weird and I've started to avoid looking at people entirely. But this... This is a totally different level. Hope you're okay.

I'm okay, but it is an autism core memory to have neurotypical people seemingly suddenly get very upset with you over social rules that you haven't even realized that you've violated.
