Indonesia is 87% Muslim and its generally safe for tourists. So that's not the reason why

Just a few years ago Indonesia was experiencing civil strife throughout the country with purges of Christians and others accused of being witches. Not sure how many were killed in the mass rioting, but last I heard it was well into the thousands.

In Malaysia not too long ago, a court ruling which allowed Christians to say "Allah" spurred protests and attacks on churches, etc.

I was surprised to find out there's also Islamic extremists causing trouble in Bangladesh, which seemed to be too poor to get involved in that stuff, at least as I saw them. Turns out I was wrong.
