Afghans are so conservative, they make our so-called conservatives look like the hippies that they are. I mean, these rednecks are still wearing long hair and beards like we're still in the 1960s for crying out loud, and still they're still sowing the fields like the Free Love Generation thing is still going on.

These people forget they keep accusing Afghans and others in the region of being stuck in a previous century. Well, they are. They're conservatives. Real conservatives. Not these pretenders who are conservative in name only.

Same with religion. So-called Christian fundamentalists are basically religious during Mass on Sundays. Even Amish come across as merely a frozen-in-time cultural bubble rather than some sort of life given over to religious servitude. A Cambodian Buddhist monk dressed in Buddhist monk robes riding on the D Train down the Grand Concourse in the Bronx is religious, an Amish in their garb is merely old timey.

Buddhist, Confucians, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims... even the more secular individuals still have something of a religious air to them. Over here the only way you can tell someone who's religious from an atheist is the "I Honk for Jesus" bumper sticker on their SUVs.

Hence the jealousy over religious devotion
