Explain to me how this makes sense

Ok - take yourself on a trip through history where nations were being formed from 5000 BC to present 7025 years... As part of wars or as part of conquering territories, nations would have flag-bearers. Flag bearers would carry the flag of the nation of their army. As part of both representation & also in part for intimidation.

It was a message that "we are here" and usually also implied "soon you will not be here." when armies went across sovereign lines of territory.

Okay, I am well versed in history, and I know that there are two ways to be proud your current or original country; Patriotism and Nationalism. Both can involve waiving flags. People can represent their homeland without hating their new country(Patriotism) or they can represent their homeland in and hate their new country(Nationalism) You don't have to hate the U.S to waive your homeland's flag. Also funny thing I noticed is that many people waiving the U.S flag show more signs of nationalism than patriotism
