Doesn't killing 60,000+ innocent civilians since October 7 sound a bit like a genocide? And before you start saying it was Hamas's fault and if they never did October 7th this would have never happened, but I heard this argument about a million times, Israel has been killing Palestians since 1947. When they committed the Nakba and killed thousands and removed even more from their homes, there was no Hamas. I'm sorry, but what do you think will happen if someone kicks your whole family out of their home, and then goes and kills them, will you just sit there and let it happen? What Hamas did on October 7th was entirely Israel's fault; if they hadn't been doing what they did to the Palestinians for almost a century now then Hamas would have no reason to attack them.

I probably agree with a lot of that except for the "What Hamas did on October 7th was entirely Israel's fault" bit. Years of oppression & discrimination are real.

But Hamas knew full well what they were doing. They knew from previous experience that (whether rightly or wrongly – hint: it's wrongly) Israel would retaliate with hell, which they did (no surprises there).

They knew countless innocent civilians from their own citizens would die and suffer. They knew it would destroy a large part of their infrastructure. And hopefully they knew it was immoral. (It goes against the religion they claim to profess, anyway. Killing innocent civilians is not allowed. You're not even allowed to destroy their crops. But I guess in their minds (not Islam) they class all Israelis (including children) as combatants & therefore a legitimate target in war since most Israelis do military service. They also killed foreign tourists & workers, as well as "fellow" Arabs & Muslims.)

But they did it anyway. Now Gaza has been destroyed. Whatever practical aim they had in their heads, it wasn't one that was ever going to improve the lives of Gazans, or make statehood any more likely. (They've probably set that back by a generation now. Hard to imagine how Israel will get over this any time soon and go back to peace talks.)

Gaza is now practically uninhabitable and it would take many years just to clear the unexploded munitions and rubble, let alone rebuild. It's a humanitarian catastrophe and I think both governments have a lot of blood on their hands.

Sounds more like a suicide mission to me or a last act of desperation and to hell with the consequences. A revenge attack to strike Israel where it hurts and finally say "up yours" with no truly thought-out rational motive.

But no good has come of it. Unless they think global public opinion will shift so much that pressure will finally be put on Israel to grant them statehood. But sacrificing your own citizens and children as martyrs to be bargaining chips for that seems pretty messed up to me. It's not like the average Gazan was asked if it was a good idea in a referendum and were willing to die if necessary and the majority said yes. (If they'd actually run something like that, that would be an interesting difference.)

Also, easy to watch it unfold when you're safe in a hotel in Qatar with billions in your bank account while "your" people starve and watch loved ones killed and maimed. No sane government would do that.
