I take it you haven't been paying attention. First of all, when a United Statian doesn't know the name of the state they live in, they ain't a United Statian. A state is not just some random exit off the highway. It's not just something that people casually forget. "Hold on, let me check Google Maps to see where I live" said no one ever.

When you encounter someone here who doesn't know that the name of the state they supposedly live in but they know who MP Chedrick Ebberton of New Brunswick is, yes, they are American. Because Canada is part of America.
But they're not from the United States.

Heck, I didn't even know who Justin Trudeau was and would have never have known until he announced he was stepping down a few months ago.
