I remember a co-worker proudly purchasing a Yugo while bragging about how economical it was. I asked him what he would do if they stopped making or supporting the vehicle. He replied, "What are the odds of that?" Two months later the country folded . . . as did their car.

A subcompact that weighed 4K and got 15 MPG was BOUND be be a winner !
(But they are only $1,995) LOL

Some fellow somewhere bought up a bunch of them for pennies on the dollar and then buried them nose first and half their length in some 'artistic' pattern in a field somewhere. One wonders if they are still there.

Growing up in the 80's by memory:
Chrysler
Reliant K series compact
Circa 1981-1983, I believe.

My friend had the Chevy version. It wasn't much on looks, but worked fine as a little commuter car around town with about 34-39mpg. Socialists would be happy with a small, ugly car that everyone had to buy no matter what...now car dynamics, safety and choice have changed; all part of what makes America Great.

Happy Independence Day

A Peoples' Car. The Nazi's German Labour Front did this in 1937 and created the Volkswagen.

It's a Dodge Omni, and I owned it's micro-truck offspring, the '82 Dodge Rampage.
Total piece of crap, inspired me to prefer non-UAW cars like Hondas.

sadly due to the EPA, it would never happen.

a simple carb setup will last decades with basic maintenance, but won't get the MPG that a auto manufacturer needs to meet fleet averages.

best a manufacturer could do is put out a vehicle with an engine that could be "devolved" to a carb setup with parts available aftermarket for a classic car. 90s Jeep six cylinders were like that. they came EFI but the block casting still had the original provisions for a carb and points ignition.

if you have an hour, find the YouTube interview of a former GM transmission design engineer blowing the whistle on the industry. they truly are catering to the "no maintenance, disposable vehicle" demographic. sad.

Sure as heck does not stop people from not taking care of their vehicle exhaust and emission systems.

New York - We have no state vehicle inspections.
Also New York - A lot of our vehicles smell like Chernobyl five seconds after it exploded.
