as of late, i have been spending a great deal of time working on an msmg website, structured to be basically an entire clone of imgflip itself, although obviously without meme generation tools and no user made streams
it has come to my attention when looking at hosting options, that even if i were to go with a ~$300/year plan for hardware services, it would still not be nearly enough disk space and RAM to store user images and posts and process requests. also, this $300/year does not cover SSL certificate costs or domain name subscriptions, so it would be more than that
therefore, the only remotely feasible way to actually run this site would be for me to actually purchase and maintain my own server hardware, and almost definitely i would need to upgrade my internet plan, which i would have to work with my parents to do. before anyone asks, no, i cannot do co-location as that is too expensive
as someone currently saving to attend early college next year after i graduate, i am a little short on money, and this is looking to have a starting cost of $700+ minimum, so here is why i am making this post: i do plan to have ads on this website. nowhere near as many as imgflip, but definitely some in order to offset my costs by maybe a few dollars a year
however, the amount of money i make from that is based on user count. i also plan on adding a donation option, which would go 100% towards maintaining and paying off hardware, although i dont expect many if any people to actually do that
basically, i need to make sure there will be an active userbase to not only make it not financially impossible, but also not a huge waste of time, so if anyone here plans on using the site frequently and/or on donating i would like to get a rough estimate of how many people that would be, so please inform me if you expect to.
