California taxpayers just found out what they really funded last year and it’s not just roads, schools, or healthcare.

CHIRLA - the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights which is now at the center of L.A.’s anti-ICE protests and chaos, reportedly pulled in $34 million in public funds in fiscal year 2023. That’s nearly 3x more than the year before.

Even wilder? 72% of that money came directly from the California Department of Social Services. That’s your tax dollars going straight into an org organizing street-level mobilizations.

CHIRLA also runs L.A.’s β€œRapid Response Network,” which shows up at ICE arrests, rallies outside detention centers, and was active during the incident involving SEIU’s David Huerta, who was arrested for obstruction.

And it gets deeper.

In 2023, Mayor Karen Bass helped CHIRLA land a $450K federal contract but that deal got frozen by DHS, triggered a lawsuit, and was ultimately canceled.

So while L.A. burns and protests rage, the money trail leads right back to state coffers and a policy pipeline that’s now under serious scrutiny.

Financial perspective? The fallout could ripple wide:
β€’ Expect audits, federal investigations, and contract freezes across similar nonprofits tied to political action.
β€’ Public trust in government spending takes a hit, which can spark ballot measures, lawsuits, and backlash from voters.
β€’ Municipal funding transparency becomes a market risk, especially for large cities handling controversial contracts.
β€’ Nonprofits across the state could face tighter compliance and funding restrictions, impacting advocacy and operations statewide.

What this means for you πŸ‘‡
If you live in California your tax money’s not just going to services, it’s funding activism.
If you’re watching state budgets and political risk: expect turbulence in how social orgs are financed and audited.
And if you’re in finance? It’s time to factor political optics into public funding analysis.

Thank you for the detailed information, the more that's put out there the better. The people need to see where their tax dollars are going, and that it's not going to help them, but to fund the politicians special interests.

My City is no different, one of their special interests is the homeless. Which our City has spent over fifty million dollars on in the last year.

But why pander to the homeless, you may ask. Because the homeless are Santa Monica For Renters Rights' ballot harvesters voting base. And that's how the City Council members there now got there.

It's all so dirty.

But thank you again for your input.

Yes she does. It’s to disrupt and destroy to β€œbuild back better.”

Are you sure it's not disrupt and destroy L.A.?

Absolutely, but that’s just for starters.

Oh yes how could we forget the affordable housing. Was that one of the things you meant?

You mean the stack n packs that are installed in every space that an old building is torn down on? Most aren’t all that affordable either.
1 up, 2w
I know and if they keep the affordable housing at a minimal amount in each building, that means you have to more market rate units to meet the affordable housing numbers you need. I personally wonder where all the water and electricity is going to come from?
