Good point. Many things that PBS had a monopoly on in the past have now been outdone by video creators on YouTube.
In 1983, Reading Rainbow had celebrities reading books aloud to kids while panning the camera across the pages. Now YouTube has a far vaster collection of ordinary people reading aloud from a much larger collection of books.
Bob Ross filmed 403 half-hour episodes of The Joy Of Painting, but there are more painting tutorials on YouTube, some of which are three hours long. There are also YouTube tutorial videos in many more areas, such as drawing with colored pencils, 3D modeling software, home repair, and sewing.
When I was younger, I enjoyed PBS. I watched episodes of GhostWriter and The Magic School Bus on Sundays. But you can get all the episodes of those shows on DVD. And they were filmed with gaps for commercial breaks so they could be shown on other networks. The same is true for series like Downton Abbey.
