Conte’ crayon drawing
by Georges Seurat | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Looking good 🙂👍
Although Seurat is best known for his paintings using tiny dots, his sketches captivated me. I love his shading and the way he doesn’t really draw an object, it kind of emerges from the page.

I saw the one with the people in the park. It's a huge painting! Huge! All those dots, my gosh. His art has always fascinated me but I didn't take it seriously until I saw one up close.

“A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
This really is huge! I’ve never seen it in person though. Sounds like you did 😎👍
I have a book on Seurat, and it shows a lot of the preparatory sketches leading up to these huge works. That’s where I saw his drawings. He had a previous large-scale painting called, “Bathers at Asnières” which was his first painting to be displayed in public. I thought it was cool that his first exhibited painting was large, because my first painting to be seen by anyone turned out to be the largest painting I’ve ever made. Not that I do anything noteworthy, but it was funny to have people ( it was family ) looking shocked because they never knew I started.

That is so cool that you paint. I've painted murals...drove my neighbor crazy which only encouraged me 😋

So Seurat would sketch first, then fill in with dots? That must have taken a long time.

I wish I could remember the name of the artist who painted an actual scene of war...he used actual blood in part of the painting.

When I was young, I read and reread a history book in art. So when I have seen paintings from the book, I am amazed. I make a point to go to art museums in every city I visit. Cool stories about a few trips.

Howdy! Sorry to take forever to get back to you. I think it’s so cool that you’ve done murals 🙂 Lol, about your neighbor 🤣
I don’t know about the artist that used real blood in a war painting, but that’s pretty intense. I saw a documentary on Picasso, who did a large anti-war painting called, “Guernica”. The narrator really gave a lot of insight which was very moving.
Seurat didn’t draw on the canvas that I’m aware of, but he made numerous drawings, sketches and smaller paintings of the people and animals that would later appear together in his large, finished paintings.
That’s great you immersed yourself into the art history book. I’ve read about art, and watched some documentaries before I actually got to an art museum. When I saw the real thing, I was speechless. Since I started painting, I liked to stand before a painting at the same distance as the artist and could almost feel their presence.
I wish you well 🙂
