As someone who DID tell my parents I was a furry when I was probably about the age you are now, I have some thoughts.

1: Take a good look at your situation. Do your parents accept alternative lifestyles? What do they think of people who dress in alt fashion? Do they particularly care about cosplayers? If any of these answers are negative, I don’t think you should bother telling them.
2:Being a furry is not something where you need to “come out”. It’s perfectly okay to enjoy the furry fandom out in the open and never have the conversation of “hey, I’m a furry”, because in my experience, parents don’t care. They don’t. Truly. Unless you’re in a situation where you think it would be BENEFICIAL to tell them, just don’t.

My parents are well aware I’m a furry, hell, I’m actively making a fursuit on the kitchen table. And while they think it’s weird, and they don’t want me attending conventions until I move out, they aren’t any different. Most parents are just like this. So truly, if you don’t feel like you need to tell them, why bother?

That being said though, my fursuit-maker friend’s mom goes to cons with them all the time and now has her own sona because she loves furries so much. So who knows!

My parents are just cautious and protective about me being a furry because they want me to be safe and want me to "check yourself before you wreck yourself" due to there being some negative connotations about the furry fandom and that I have a slight deficit for social and psycho-emotional development due to my childhood being a bit of a roller-coaster (i may be gullible and impulsive as a result), but other than that they're really chill about it - they don't mind me being a furry, they just want to make sure I engage in it safely :>

Anything beyond that where you're self sufficient, go ahead. You don't need to care anyways. Just explain it to your family calmly and reasonably.
I'm personally neve gonna tell them bc it's not something you should have to make a big deal about, it's just who you are and what you enjoy. Be yourself as much as you safely can and let people just deal with it. Wishing you luck on whatever you decide

Honestly if she thinks it's a sex thing or smth, don't. But if there's a chance to explain, do it. Don't immediately say "hey mom I'm a furry" try starting with just showing her some art of an oc or smth (this is gonna take time btw), and then move on to telling her (if you want a fursuit [EXPENSIVE AS HELL, DON'T GET ONE UNLESS YOU'RE SURE YOU CAN AFFORD IT]) that you would be interested in like, a Halloween costume or smth of your fursona(s). If that all goes fine, then later on you can move on to explaining what a furry actually is (using your own life as evidence and stuff) so your mom doesn't freak out. Or you can just be like me and have three dinomasks (unfurred T-T) and stupid parents so they have no idea what you are lol.
