Perhaps an explanation is necessary. All members of the military lose their civil rights and become subject to the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice). They are judged by their Commander on an individual basis. Stripes are rankings. GAWD I hate explaining humor. This is for you civilians. :)
