The thing is, normal simply means statistically common. It is not a judgement call on acceptability. So being gay, trans, etc. Isn't normal. That does not mean it's unacceptable.

Perhaps if they phrased it as they want acceptance of it normalized, it would be less disturbing.

That is not the only definition of "normal" - Normal also means

Functioning or occurring in a natural way; lacking observable abnormalities or deficiencies.
Relating to or designating the normality of a solution.
