Both her parents held advanced degrees and earned upper class incomes. She was not raised in Oakland. Her parents lived in Berkeley, CA which is considerably more affluent than Oakland. Then her mother moved them to one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Quebec, Canada during her teen years.
