While the lineage of that particular quote is dubious at best, it's hardly surprising a country boy from Texas born in 1908 would use the racial slurs of those times.

That doesn't change the fact that he was likely the most radically progressive president we've had, that he was the singularly most influential actor in advancing and enshrining civil rights in American law, and in doing so managed to turn the party who abolished slavery in the 1860s into the party of the Klan by the 1970s.

Not in the way you imagine - he didn't wave a magic wand, but convinced the blue dogs to pass the CRA by speaking to them in their language to get their guards down and convince them that they were the ones pulling a fast one.

It was in the aftermath of the CRA that the Democratic party became wildly unpopular with southern whites, and those politicians fled.

I did overstate his part in the GOP becoming the party of the Klan - he did not, of course, force the Republicans to welcome the former confederates with open arms - Nixon just thought it would be politically expedient to do so.

You seem confused - LBJ convinced racist white Southern Democrats to support the passage of the civil rights act, and when they realized what they'd done, they became Republicans.

You can see where it happened on this graph - at the top you have the antebellum south, solidly voting democratic, then around the time of the CRA, it went red.

The people of the south didn't suddenly embrace racial diversity - these were the people who built all those tacky statutes of slavers, after all.
