Johnson wasn't just saying this as an idle comment or out of some deeply intellectual pondering of the nature of the universe - he was describing the Republican efforts to attract the racist white southern vote - which yes he himself had grown up in and been part of - because they were disenchanted with the Democratic party's embrace of civil rights.

And he was 100% correct - just look at the voting patterns of the deep south between 40s and 70s - solidly democrat first fractured, and then became solidly Republican by the time of Nixon's second inauguration because of the GOP's Southern Strategy to embrace the Klan demographic.

And yes, those are Trump's supporters today.

I never said Trump was perfect or the most desirable candidate, but I think he is better than the alternative.
