They can say whatever they want to polish the turd any way they see fit.
But it doesn't change the fact that he said he carried a weapon of war "in war"" when he was never in war. Of all the lies to tell about yourself, that's the one that will piss off the most number of people, particularly veterans and their families.
He seems to have a problem telling the truth about himself. I don't know if it's accurate (haven't had the time, nor the inclination to check it out) but I heard that he said he was a head football coach, when he was an assistant coach.
So the problem isn't with what he actually did. His military record would have been fine the way it was if presented accurately, and his coaching experience would have to be viewed as a plus. There is nothing wrong with being an assistant coach.
The problem is with him trying to make it look like he's done more than he actually has.
