Hits home, I got food poisoning twice on one deployment (local cooks worked in the chow hall) and the staff officers told us the food was carefully inspected and was fine.

Base military food has always been an experience, an adventure, and definitely a gamble.

An apt description. Of course my memories of that is fifty years ago and by now I'm certain they must be up to gourmet standards. LOL.

Mystery Meat & Guinea Piggin' has been around forever !

As a former submariner I was spoiled while at sea. The food onboard was fantastic. Base food, however, was up -- down? -- to normal military standards.

I had a friend chug OJ & I watched a roach go down with the last bit !
He looked at me & I just shook my head. He ate PX food for a month, went broke, then to the shrink to try & get seperate rats. LOL
Soon he was back with all the rest of us.
No telling what we ate.

I seldom spent money while enlisted on anything besides food and booze, and so I always had enough for at least dinner at the Enlisted Men's Club. Of course by the time I got out of the service I was an alcoholic. Meh . . . so it goes.

He was an E-2 at that time.
$450ish a month.
We bought racks at the schnell imbiss & drank a bit, lol.
Luckily I hated the after effects.

Yeah . . . good times and bad results -- for some of us; that is. I wouldn't wish those experiences away for anything in the world, but I also would never want to go through that stuff again. It's been almost fifty years for me since my discharge. Truth to tell the specific incidents now have dropped into the realm of, "Wait a minute. Did I do that or do I just think that it's how it happened?" Oh well.
