Trump didn't know; but since he isn't a leftist he had the courage to stand up anyway. The Secret Service, however, did know because they knew about the shooter waaaaaaaay in advance and deliberately let him set up and take his shots. They had eyes on him the whole time.

It's easy to sit here now, knowing all the circumstances and try and dictate how anybody would react, and just what they should've done.

I think if there had been a second shooter, they should have gotten Trump to the vehicle even faster. Leaving Trump exposed (even with Secret Service agents surrounding him) on the stage would have been dangerous since a second shooter could open up on him with multiple shots fired from a location that was likely not known to the Secret Service. That's just my $0.02 worth, since I know nothing about Secret Service protocols.

As for Trump's exposure after standing up, that's partly on whichever Trump-hater assigned the shorter agents to his detail, but also on Trump because he wanted to let the crowd see him and know he was okay.
