This is good advice. What I would add is that if this person takes your good advice, they need to understand that the classical use and meaning of the word "liberal" has changed over the years.
So they may read about liberal ideals, etc., that are actually pretty much conservative ideals today. Hell, JFK was a liberal and he'd likely be drummed out of their party were he alive today, for being a right wing fascist.
