I mean, I’m all for freedom of speech and expression and all that, but I don’t think that every idea has equal value or safety in the marketplace of ideas. After all, our literal markets have restrictions on things like dangerous drugs for good reason. That being said, you have a point there.
And yeah, neither group has much appeal these days. Not since the ideas of Williams Jennings Bryan overtook the more restrictive platforms of the Democrat party have many politicians entertained either group’s ideas. But they’ve still existed on both parties, though they weren’t too open about their affiliations. Though yes, Wilson is definitely in the wrong for hiring them, as well as any other politician who’s done the same.
As for why they’ve been shifting towards the Republicans side, I actually read a good book on that called The Politics of Losing. Admittedly, it’s more about how Trump won 2016, and drawing parallels between his campaign’s strategies and KKK recruitment strategies, though that’s not to say said methods were deliberately inspired by the other. I recommend you give it a read and tell me what you think about it
