You know what... I'll concede a little bit on this claim. Yes, the titles for these different subgroups can be very convoluted. It's very difficult to place people in boxes because in many cases there's an overlap. In other cases, there's fake versions of each. A person calling themselves a liberal today isn't exactly the same as the classical liberal version of the past. Even worse, if we're talking about a politician who calls themselves "liberal". There's a good chance they're not liberal. Politicians tend to choose titles.
For example, Liberal at it's core means freedom of individual rights and acceptance of new ideas and tolerance for others behaviors when they deviate from the social norms.
Conservatives tend to go in the other direction. They want to preserve traditionalism.
Both sides over time seem to be slipping apart. Mostly with the liberal left going further left. That's what being a leftist is. Moving further left away from classical liberalism is what a LEFTIST is. Leftists make unnecessary overcorrections for issues that they deem incorrect.
Classical liberals believed in gun rights. The right and freedom to own a gun for protection was a shared belief between liberals and conservatives.
Freedom of speech, was a liberal stance. Nowadays the "leftists" are vehemently opposed to free speech unless it's the kind of speech they agree with. Essentially leftist = radical
