In addition, when the Republican party was founded, the biggest industry in the US was agriculture. 100's of thousands of private farms all over America. A small number of those farms had slave labor. It was the rich and powerful farm owners who had slaves. Not the poor farmers like my dad's side of my family. Poor farmers where only able to eat what they could grow. If they could not grow it they starved. That is just how it was for my family even up to when my dad was born. My dad's family didn't want slaves and could never afford to buy them and feed, house and cloth them if they ever did.
The Republican party was born out of the abolitionists in the Whig party. The Whig party fell apart for several reasons (one because they had the dumbest name ever) and one of them was a division on the slavery issue. When the Republican party formed they took up the cause of ending slavery but they still had other issues about how to run the country. So, no. There was no expiration date. And even if there was and there was no Republican party today, it still would not change the fact that the Republican party was centered on ending slavery.
In actuality what Abraham Lincoln did to end slavery was to violate the Constitution. Lincoln just about threw the 10th amendment out of the window to force states to comply with the Federal Government. That was wrong but the reason he did it was right. Unfortunately it opened the door for Progressives to push their Marxist dogma on the America people.

I think what your problem here is, you are thinking that doing anything that helps any business at all is seen as offensive. I 100% believe in a wall of separation of business and government. The army didn't call up all platoons to go overseas. His was just one of the ones that didn't go. Plus he enlisted less than a year before the war ended and he finished his service during peacetime. He didn't have to enlist. He was a plumber and plumbers were considered essential civilians and were not drafted. That's why he enlisted, he wanted to serve. After entering the Army he decided he wanted be a paratrooper. He signed up for that and was accepted. Has he not been accepted his platoon he was in at the time did get called up and sent overseas not very long after he got transferred.
He (or should I say I) got lucky. Had he been killed, I wouldn't be here and I'm glad to be here.
My dad did not do anything special to get out of going overseas, he was just lucky. It would be bad battle tactics to send all of your soldiers into battle, even if we are fighting in two parts of the world. You have to have some in reserve. Not that my dad was in some sort of reserve unit, he was just lucky. Especially being a paratrooper, paratroopers were easy targets.
My uncle, on the other hand, was drafted and was sent to Italy. He was severely wounded and was sent home. He eventually died from that wound but it was several years later.
