Probably because even while slavery was at its peak we kept hypocritically insisting we were the "land of the free".

The great compromise didn’t have anything to do with race, it was for slaves not blacks and it was done so that the slave states would have less of a say than the free states.

The vast majority of slaves were blacks.

Yes most of them were, but that doesn’t mean all of them were there were plenty of white slaves and black slave owners.
