Housing is now unaffordable for a record half of all U.S. renters, study finds

A newly released report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. It finds that in 2022, as rents spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic, a record half of U.S. renters paid more than 30% of their income for rent and utilities. Nearly half of those people were severely cost-burdened, paying more than 50% of their income.

I noticed a pattern. They all like to shout GDP! GDP! But they have no idea what is going on around them.

Nope they don't... It's a lot of hot air generated by the government...

The Non-partisan Brookings Institute published a paper titled "11-Facts on the Economic Recovery From the COVID-19 Pandemic." The following is from that report:

"Fact 5: Even with recent jumps in inflation, lower income workers are seeing increases in real wages.
.
Fact 6: Post-pandemic, income after government taxes and transfers, as well as household saving, have been above their recent trends..

Fact 7: Fiscal support led to a reduction in poverty in 2020.

Fact 8: To date, 36 states have made progress in catching up on delinquent rent and mortgage payments."

For a year COVID-19 interrupted supply chains, including building of housing. Demand exceeded supply, causing inflation. Inflation was a real consequence of the COVID-19 Pandemic response by the Trump Administration. Any possible mitigation was up to him, not Biden. Fact.

GDP... LOL

The result, for better or worse, speak for themselves: while Q4 GDP rose by $329 billion to $27.939 trillion, a respectable if made up number, what is much more disturbing is that over the same time period, the US budget deficit rose by more than 50%, or $510 billion. And the cherry on top: the increase in public US debt in the same three month period was a stunning $834 billion, or 154% more than the increase in GDP. In other words, it now takes $1.55 in budget deficit to generate $1 of growth... and it takes over $2.50 in new debt to generate $1 of GDP growth!

OOPS.... Larry

He fears being compared to Herbert Hoover, if he wins and the economy tanks (again) while he is President. Herbert Hoover was a legendary humanist. He headed up the Food for Peace Program that kept children from starving to death in post WWI Europe. When Harry Truman asked him to reprise that role after WWII he rose to the challenge. I cannot imagine Donald Trump echoing the following statement about the value of "giving back," issued by Herbert Hoover:

"You cannot retire from the voluntary field if you wish our American civilization to survive. The essence of our self-government lies by cooperation in self-government outside of political government. Ours is a voluntary cooperative society. The fabric of American community life is woven around our tens of thousands of voluntary associations. That is, around our churches, our professional societies, our women’s organizations, our businesses, our labor and farmers’ associations—and not least, our charitable institutions. That is the very nature of American life."

Yes, you remember him well. He was your earliest president you lived under.

I went to a high school and college that had these classes called "History." In addition, my interest in politics compelled me to read about how and why important things happened. In his post-presidential years, Herbert Hoover's philanthropy was like Jimmy Carter's on steroids. My political "hero," is Harry S Truman. Like Truman, I try to find the good in people, including those with whom I disagree. There is a lot to like about Herbert Hoover. Anyone who calls themself a conservative Republican should read his history. He was the last true "small-government," leader of the GOP.
