It was actually invented in the Middle Ages from what I remember, I think people using bows thought shooting arrows with their middle finger out made them better. So others who didn't use bows who were fed up with the bow people did that to the bow people, they also noticed that it looked like an upside down bird hence the terms: flipping the bird, flipping one off
