Back when you needed a Sponsor, to vouch for you and was responsible for your existence if your sorry ass didn't get a job and contribute.

NOT given a $1,800 refillable "relocation card", health care, housing, food, a drivers license, and the ability to carry a gun and a badge and arrest people, even while still a non citizen, (Illinois for one).

Then. Back then.

That's the way it was until Ronnie Ray-Gun zapped the Immigration & Naturalization Service in the name of "smaller government".

Assimilation was part of legal immigration. The grandparents you refer to, wanted to become Americans.

Mine left Norway in the early 1800s, landed at Newfoundland, and started working their way westward across Canada. When they got to Manitoba they turned left and settled in Minnesota. SKOL!

****sigh****
Typical stereotypical portrayal of people and culture you don’t know a damn thing about nor care to .
Next time add some horses, oil wells, and cattle to be totally cliche.
