Doesn’t a regular commercial airplane get from Los Angeles to New York in 5 hours? Or one or two days? Or am I missing something here?

Yes you are. You’re missing the repeated landings and recharging time.

It's 1,400ish miles from Vermont to Florida. It's 1,800ish miles from Missouri to California.

So I would imagine that if the airplane stayed on the ground and just taxied from Vermont to Florida it would have gotten there sooner. I wonder if it had enough speed to even take off, let alone fly to Florida.
