Yep. And if I was religious I'd be right pissed that it had been co-opted by consumerism and corrupted into just another excuse to buy shit.

Hi, Christian here. Why are you questioning atheists for celebrating our holiday? If anything it shows a positive impact we have made on the earth. For making a holiday that, at its core,is so focused on love, forgiveness, and giving. The fact that it goes beyond religious barriers is beautiful.
It makes me proud to be a Christian.

Before there was organised religion, pagan or otherwise, there was the meetings of the clans. Many such meetings took place over the winter solstice and the children that had matured were gathered to know each other and find mates to live as partners, breed and raise families.

No. I see religion for what it is! That being said, it's not all bad but the problem is most of the people pushing it, do it for selfish reasons! IMHO Atheists have a problem with all self proclaimed authority, Some people don't realise that they have a problem with self proclaimed authority until the one they believe in is challenged by people that believe in a different self proclaimed authority. Sounds hypocritical yes?

Somewhere in its history every religion, has at its beginning a leader that says: "I am god" or "I have been authorised by God" or "I am The Anointed One authorised by God" or "I am the way to salvation authorised by God" or something like that. That is self proclaimed authority!

Before there was Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and the lot, there was the gatherings of the clans. People related to each other through family or friendship would gather to celebrate the different aspects of the seasons, celebrating the hunt, the harvest, the birthing of livestock, the searing of sheep, the planting of crops, the building of infrastructures, etc.. You might just ask why do you celebrate, and leave Christmas out of the question!

Because taking the time to acknowledge your family and friends by giving them gifts is great. To be acknowledged by your friends and family is fantastic, especially when it involves a thoughtful gift. But why the 25th of december? Because it's culturally established as a day to do exactly that, so... keep doing that.

You don't need an invisible sky daddy who also impregnanted a married woman with himself to tell your friends and family that you care about them during the darkest coldest parts of the year.
