Something that I learned recently. The service families who were stationed in Japan after the war had interesting experiences. The Japanese would thank them in private for dropping the bombs.
Apparently the ruling class was starving the people, and if we had taken the time to invade, there might not have been anybody left. Obviously the people around Hiroshima and Nagasaki felt differently.
Apparently it was something never discussed except with friends because of the sense of national shame.
