Don't attack a country if you can't take the retalliation

Oh, well... 🤷🏼 Actions have consequences.

With Japan, the ceasefire happened shortly after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And that ceasefire has held from 1945 to the present.

I give Truman this much - it was one heck of a bluff saying unless Japan surrendered the US would keep dropping those bombs and there was only the two used.

Of course Truman dropped the ball big time afterwards when he refused an invasion of China and Soviet Union which would've shut down communism hard because those two countries were very weak after the fact.

Something that I learned recently. The service families who were stationed in Japan after the war had interesting experiences. The Japanese would thank them in private for dropping the bombs.

Apparently the ruling class was starving the people, and if we had taken the time to invade, there might not have been anybody left. Obviously the people around Hiroshima and Nagasaki felt differently.

Apparently it was something never discussed except with friends because of the sense of national shame.

Exactly... hundreds of thousands of lives were spared from an invasion...
