I guess one factor is the so-called "cultural appropriation" from dressing as nonwhite characters, but I say poo to that! If it's okay for a nonwhite kid to dress up as Gaston, then it should be okay for a white kid to dress up as Moana. I hate to think of what people would say to a black kid for dressing as Tarzan or Jane, though...

Yet gender appropriation is not only permitted by schools but dressing in costume every day is vehemently defended.

No one cares if a black child dresses as Tarzan, Superman, or Bill Clinton.

Let a white kid dress as Obama, Black Panther, or Shaft and people are gonna lose their minds.
