General and Flag Officers include Admirals. I found an article written by a Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves, which supports your estimate of the current level of these officers in the DoD. But, the number of these officers during WWII were substantially more than your number. Read on:

Are There Too Many General Officers for Today’s Military?
By Gregory C. McCarthy Joint Force Quarterly
"There are approximately 900 Active-duty general/flag officers (GO/FOs) today of 1.3 million troops. This is a ratio of 1 GO/FO for every 1,400 troops. During World War II, an admittedly different era, there were more than 2,000 GO/FOs for a little more than 12 million Active troops."

During WWII we had two and a half GO/FOs supervising ten times the number of active duty troops than we have today. The number 17 is wrong, It may be easier to track the number of GO/FOs today, since that number is limited by law.

Today's weapons systems and other functions are far more high-tech requiring a more skilled and highly trained work force. A person supervising a company, approx. 250 people, of computer geeks responsible for Nuclear Warfare Systems would outrank an Infantry Officer in charge of 250-grunts.

To answer your question, I don't think we need more GO/FOs. My original posting never broached the subject.

Oh. So during WWII they only supervised 10 times as many people. Good thing we aren't at war, huh Larry? We would probably need 50,000 Generals these days- what a chain of command disaster that would be.
Too many of the promos held up by Tuberville are for inflated officers positions. I get it that a member of the armed forces serves 15 years and deserves a promotion, but with enlistments in the tank, we'll have more officers than enlisted personell before long. Tuberville is right, why should 50% of the taxpayers who oppose abortion have to pay for abortions for a very small handful of careless pregnancies, which go up whenever there is a deployment?

Nice spin. What source is telling you that?

I heard Coach Tuberville say himself that his "block," is still in place, just a few hours ago. He wants a religion based decision making process forced on every woman in America. He is willing to degrade our military readiness to make this happen.

Gertrude Stein wrote, "A block is a block is a block," or something like that. However you spin it, he pulled this stunt to protest abortion. Roll Call votes to correct his misdeed, would take an estimated 700-hours of Senate time. I see an end to the easy "blocking" on the horizon.

Until Tuberville's tantrum, officer promotions were seen as routine administrative procedures Neither party's leadership thought any senator would do what he has done to the patriotic heroes who serve honorably.

The government doesn't pay for abortions. Its long standing policy of providing eave for service members to get medical care not available where they are stationed and reimbursing them for travel costs, etc, does not explicitly exempt abortions. Tuberville knows that a bill to change this policy has zero chance of being enacted. He is punishing people who do not have the power to change this policy, because he is a jerk who doesn't care about our armed forces. This stunt will cost the GOP vote, and not just from the pro-choice crowd. Shutting things down because the majority disagrees with you is not governance.

This all comes down to the extreme-right wing's obsession with abortion. Where in the Uniform Code of Military Justice is the equivalent of the so-called "Hyde Act?"

I prefer any and all preventative methods. I am not pro-abortion. I just don't see how the
Constitution allows me to make medical decisions for other people.

Hyde act is the law of all the land and not limited to military personnel.

The Uniform Code of Military Justice is a set of laws replacing many civilian laws, like the Hyde Act.
