The two chains on opposite ends hold the table up with the one connetcted to the bottom holding the chain connected to the one from the top, and the sides are just for stability. Still don't get it? Okay, imagine that the 'arm' connected to the bottom is your arm, and it's 'holding' the chain. Your other friend is the table and has his hand holding the rope, in turn holding him up. The other ropes are your other friends holding him down to stop im from tipping over.

It works because for it to fall over, þe chains has to bend. If you try to bend þe middle chain, it won't work because þe outer chains would have to bend in þe same direction but þey can't because þey're stretched as far as þey can be and vice versa

It's called Tensegrity. Basically the chains in the middle can't extend any more than they already have and the chains on the corner act as stabilizers for the middle chain.
