I have it as an app(shortcut, not from the play/app store, it pretty much just opens the site)

this happened to me once. every time you refresh, it gets exponentially larger. an easy way to fix it is to
1: on the bar on top of your screen, click safari > settings.
2: in advanced, click "show develop menu in menu bar"
3: back on the menu bar, click on "develop"
4: click "empty caches"

this may cause websites you visit a lot to slow down for a tiny bit, but i will fix the issue.

If it's anything like PC, it's commonly a preload cache setting, saves certain resources and settings to your drive that are frequently used to allow for faster loading. This would include things like the header logo and utility graphics (the "random meme" button and magnifying glass), and even any ads you might see. Then it can call them faster directly from your drive rather than lagging you or using up your bandwidth having to re-download them every single time.

MacBook Pros and iMacs are actually good, despite what you might think (yes, I am on an air and this sucks)

They could be the best performing products on the market, but they're still Apple products.
