All Nixon REALLY did wrong was tell the head of the CIA he knew who killed Jack.

And I'm sure ending Vietnam also ticked off quite a few people that were part of the military industrial complex and were profiting off that nightmare of a mess. Oh, and being a republican president that was in office when the US reached the moon first probably angered the democrats more than the Soviet Union.

The country was not as polarized between Democrats and Republicans in 1970, but the Democrats did have a supermajority. Nixon promised to get US out of the Vietnam War. Johnson's support for the war destroyed the Democrats' chances to win the election. Nixion won by a landslide. Years of socialist policies had ruined the Soviet economy. Russians just wanted blue jeans and color TVs.
