They actually missed an opportunity, here.
See, the story could lead into Rey Palpatine redeeming her family bloodline in the same way Luke Skywalker redeemed his. They basically would be healing the Star Wars equivalent of what some call "generational curses." It would've fit in quite well with Star Wars and it's themes of children redeeming their fathers.
I think one of Lucas's original scripts did have a few parallels to what Disney Canon put in it's trilogy. He was thinking about calling the female lead Luka.
Rey Palpatine could've been her real name, but after earning the love, respect, and trust of her friends and allies, and being trained under Luke, Rey could've gotten the pet nickname of "Luka Skywalker", said affectionately. It would've been because she had trained under Luke directly, but had become such a friend of the family and had a parallel journey they would've seen her as extended family. Although she was a Palpatine, she would've succeeded the Skywalkers in Spirit, without taking the Skywalker name in a way that would've upset fans.
Just an idea.
This would've translated better in a TV series, though. If you took the Disney Sequels, cut out the divisive stuff, and incorporated a lot of the discarded scripts in a TV series you might've had an enjoyable product. It wouldn't be meant to be a trilogy but it would be a big tv event.
